Secure · Practical · Proportionate

Build a more productive business with AI, without creating unnecessary risk.

Stephenson Institute helps South Carolina employers find where AI can save real time and money, put it to work safely, and train their team to use it well.

Built on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework

For South Carolina employers exploring how to use AI safely and profitably.

Grounded in NIST AI RMF

The federal framework for responsible AI risk management.

Fixed scope, fixed price

One 30-day sprint with a set scope. No open-ended retainers.

Measured in dollars

Every engagement ends in a before-and-after impact report.

Proportionate by design

Right-sized safeguards, not enterprise bureaucracy.

The real challenge

You probably don’t need more AI tools.
You need to know where AI actually belongs.

Your employees are hearing about ChatGPT, Copilot, AI agents, and automation every day. Some may already be using them. The challenge isn’t getting access to AI. It’s answering the questions that come before it.

  • 01 Where will AI actually create value?
  • 02 Which workflows should we change first?
  • 03 What company information should AI access?
  • 04 What risks are we introducing?
  • 05 How should employees use these systems?
  • 06 How will we know if the investment worked?

Stephenson Institute helps you answer those questions before you spend money on the wrong tools.

One workflow · Measurable impact

The Stephenson Secure AI Profit Sprint

A 30-day project that takes you from “not sure where to start” to one AI change that works and pays off.

STEP1

Find the opportunity

We talk with your leaders and staff to learn how work really gets done. Then we find the slow, costly, repeated tasks where AI could help.

STEP2

Prioritize the right workflow

Not every AI idea is worth doing. We weigh each one and pick the best task to start with.

Economic valueImplementation feasibilityBusiness risk
STEP3

Assess the risk

Using the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, we check the risks that actually matter. We don’t pile on rules. We match the safeguards to the real risk.

STEP4

Implement

We rebuild the task with AI and put it to work. The right tool depends on the problem.

AI-assisted knowledge workWorkflow automationDocument processingEmployee copilotsAI agentsSoftware integrations
STEP5

Train your people

Tools don’t help if your people can’t use them. We train the team that runs the task so they know how it works, when to use AI, when to use their own judgment, and what rules to follow.

STEP6

Measure the result

We measure before and after, so you can see exactly what changed.

Why Stephenson

AI should add value, not add headaches.

Many companies approach AI from one of two extremes. We believe there is a better approach.

Extreme #1

Move fast and automate everything

That can open you up to security, privacy, and other risks you didn’t plan for.

Extreme #2

Restrict AI so much it can’t be used

So many rules that your team can’t really use AI, so you lose most of the upside.

Secure. Practical. Right-sized. The care a big company takes, scaled to fit a business like yours.

Built for South Carolina employers

We’re starting close to home.

Stephenson Institute helps South Carolina businesses get their share of what AI can do.

Our mission: help South Carolina show the whole country how to use AI safely and make money doing it, one business and one workflow at a time.
  • South Carolina professional-service organizations
  • Initial emphasis on law firms and knowledge-intensive businesses
Our long-term goal

Help South Carolina become a national example of secure, economically productive AI adoption.

For law firms

Your attorneys shouldn’t be your most expensive administrative workers.

Law firms run on expert judgment. Yet lawyers, paralegals, and staff still lose hours to repeat busywork. Legal services also involve confidential, sensitive information, so AI implementation requires more than choosing a tool.

Client intake Document summarization Knowledge retrieval Draft preparation Billing narratives Research support
We help firms determine
  • What should be AI-enabled
  • What shouldn’t be automated
  • What information can be used
  • Where humans must remain involved
  • What safeguards are proportionate
  • Whether it produces measurable value
The business case for AI

Don’t start with software. Start with economics.

Imagine a recurring task that consumes about $40 of staff time each time it’s completed, and your team does it 300 times every month.

$40Staff time per task
×300Times per month
$12,000Monthly labor capacity

AI doesn’t need to replace the task to create value. If AI reduces the human effort required, the economics can look like this:

Time reductionAnnual capacity created
15%$21,600
30%$43,200
50%$72,000

Even a 15% improvement can matter.

The goal isn’t necessarily to cut jobs. It’s to reduce repetitive work, increase capacity, and let your existing team accomplish more with the resources you already have.

We identify the workflows where AI can create measurable business value, before recommending the technology.

What we don’t do

We’re not here to sell you AI for the sake of AI.

We don’t start by asking which AI tool to buy. We ask which business problem is worth solving. If AI isn’t the right fix, or the risk isn’t worth it, we’ll say so.

Our job isn’t to cram in as much AI as possible.
It’s to help you make smart AI choices.
Our mission

Help South Carolina help build the AI economy, instead of getting left behind by it.

Starting at home, in South Carolina.

About the Institute

AI is changing how work gets done. We want South Carolina ready.

Big companies already have whole teams to figure out AI. Most South Carolina businesses do not. That gap is a real risk, and a real chance.

Stephenson Institute is here to close it. We help local employers put AI to work safely, teach their people to use it well, and show that it paid off. One business and one workflow at a time.

When our businesses move early and move smart, our workers and our towns win too.

Questions

Frequently asked

No. Many of the organizations we work with are still determining where AI should be used. The Profit Sprint is designed to help answer that question.
Law firms are our current initial focus, but we evaluate engagements with other South Carolina employers where there is a strong fit.
Cybersecurity is a core part of our methodology, but Stephenson Institute is not a traditional managed security provider. We focus specifically on helping organizations adopt and operate AI securely.
Not exactly. Automation may be part of an implementation, but we start with the business problem rather than the technology.
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework provides a flexible, risk-based approach to responsible AI adoption. We translate it into a practical methodology appropriate for the size, complexity, and actual risk of the organization.
That is not the objective of our methodology. We primarily look for opportunities where AI can increase employee capacity, reduce repetitive work, and allow people to focus on higher-value activities.
If the first workflow produces a strong result, we can help implement additional opportunities through a Secure AI Expansion engagement. Organizations requiring ongoing support may also engage us as an AI Operating Partner.
The next step

You don’t need an AI transformation.
You need one AI win.

Find the workflow. Understand the economics. Manage the risk. Implement it. Train your people. Measure the result. Then decide what comes next.
